Samurai Warriors mezcla la historia militar japonesa con tintes fantásticos, todo en forma de beat 'em up con 26 personajes jugables (cada uno con sus habilidades); entre éstos estará el legendario Miyamoto Musashi (samurai y tratadista), el unificador de Japón Tokugawa Ieyasu, y el enigmático ninja Kotaro Fuma.

El juego dispone de más de 70 secuencias cinemáticas supervisadas por el director Shinsuke Sato y la música está a cargo de Minoru Mukaiya, reconocidos artistas del panorama japonés. Samurai Warriors cuenta con modo cooperativo para dos jugadores, cuatro si jugamos al modo extra llamado Sugoroku (un juego de tablero).
